Phenylephrine Medication Overview
Phenylephrine is a medication used to relieve nasal discomfort caused by colds, allergies, and hay fever. It also relieves sinus congestion and pressure.
It is part of the nasal decongestants class and works by reducing swelling of blood vessels in the nasal passages.
Usage of Phenylephrine
It is taken every 4 hours as needed and should be taken exactly as directed.
It can be taken alone or in combination with other medications.
It is important to read the package label carefully before using two or more products at the same time to avoid overdose.
If a child is given phenylephrine or a combination product that contains phenylephrine, they should be given the dose that matches the child’s age on the chart.
If symptoms do not improve within 7 days or if the child has a fever, stop taking phenylephrine and call the doctor.
Special Precaution Of Phenylephrine
Before taking phenylephrine, inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to phenylephrine, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in phenylephrine preparations.
Do not take phenylephrine if you are taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, have high blood pressure, diabetes, trouble urinating, thyroid or heart disease, are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have phenylketonuria (PKU).
