NASA Asteroid Impact Risk: 2024 YR4 Predictions Updated

NASA’s Calculated Effects of Asteroids on Earth

• NASA notes a change in asteroid 2024 YR4 striking Earth in 2032 risk from 3.1% to 1.5%.
In • Found in December last year, the asteroid dubbed the “city-killer” is between 130 and 330 feet wide.

• The danger is calculated by the European Space Agency (ESA) as 2.8%. The asteroid has a 0.8% chance of striking the Moon rather than Earth on December 22, 2032.
As additional data come in, the uncertainty around the orbit of the asteroid should drop, therefore possibly raising the anticipated risk.
Tracking the asteroid, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is determining its size and orbit using various telescopes.
” • Although greater study is likely to lower the 1% or higher probability of a collision producing localised damage indicated by current predictions,
• NASA believes there is a slim 1% chance the asteroid would affect the moon even if 2024 YR4 avoids Earth in 2032.
• The most likely result is the asteroid missing Earth and its lunar buddy carrying on its orbit around the sun.
